Viv's First (and nearly giftless) Christmas

Vivi had her first Christmas! Though she didn't get many gifts, she seemed to thoroughly enjoy herself.

The festivities started at the Page family Christmas party the weekend before Christmas:

Viv and Mommy waiting for Santa

Viv on Santa's lap (no tears!!! I think she may have even enjoyed it)

Viv opening the first present of her first Christmas (two teething toys and a romper)

Another shot of her opening said present

We all spent Christmas Eve and Nana's house (G-ma Phyllis):

Viv got a talking/singing frog (LeapFrog) from her Crandall cousins. She adores it. Evertime it turns on she starts dancing and kicking. Despite the really annoying song "Happy Hands," Mommy and Daddy think it's a fabulous toy, too.

Nana gave Vivi this snowsuit and a fabulous Ralph Lauren summer dress that we can't wait for her to wear!!!

Vivi's cousin Logan really loved the Lego's that Viv picked out for him

By the end of the night Viv was verging on meltdown and was more-than-ready to go to sleep and dream of sugarplum fairies and Santa Claus

We slept at and spent Christmas Day at Pop and Grandma Nancy's:

Viv opening presents on Christmas morning

Viv and her new toy (one of two non-clothing gifts from Mommy and Daddy)

Here's what Vivi thought of the clothes Mommy and Daddy gave her ("What! Where are the toys?")

Rob and I did well for ourselves this Christmas. Rob got this cool A's hat and a bunch of clothes for work (which he desperately needed) and I got a new laptop and a J.Crew shopping spree!

Here are Viv and Pop showing off her new fabulous princess dress (it's from Pop and G-ma Nancy)

Here is Viv with her adorable stocking Grandma Nancy got for her (it has her name at the top)

G-ma Nancy and Pop also gave Viv a super soft Teddy bear (half of which is shown in this picture).

Viv still loves her Teddy Bear and toys, but still shows no interest in the clothing. It seems that while Grandma Nancy, Pop and Nana all win big for their fabulous gifts, Viv is keeping her finger crossed that Mom/Dad/Santa step up next year.

To My Friends...

I recently had a conversation with one of my friends who lives in another area. She was lamenting that she didn't feel any real connection with anyone around her and was often lonely and bored because of this lack of friendship. This made me think of how very lucky I am to have some of the most amazing women in the world as friends. Truly, I cannot imagine anyone being more blessed with fabulous friends than I have been. Having said that, I regret to admit that I rarely thank these friends or even acknowledge how special they are in my life. Until now..... (in alphebetical order)

Allison Evans: I love hanging out with Allison. She is so hilarious and when I'm around her she makes me feel like I'm equally hilarious (thanks for laughing at my lame jokes Alli). I never laugh harder than when I'm hanging with Alli. She is so talented and fun, yet so down-to-earth. She is also very open and honest which I find a rare and wonderfuly quality.
Amanda Lewis: When you first meet Amanda you immediately see that, though she is a bit shy, she is a very sweet person. If you didn't probe, you would always know her as a quiet, beautiful soul that is filled with kindness. However, upon getting to know her and reading her blog (which I suggest you all do) you will also find out that she is a funny, smart, interesting person with a lot of great things to say. Amanda, I love your blog!
Amber Smith: Amber epitomizes the saying, "Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver, the other gold." Amber is the goldest of my gold friends. She has been there for me through everything. She knows me inside and out and loves me anyway. She is so fun, easy-going and understanding that everyone who meets her wants to be around her. Everyone needs a friend like Amber. Amber, you'll always be my BFF! ;)
Amy Allebest: For the longest time I have watched Amy with the utmost admiration. She is the epitome of poise and finesse. However, it has only been upon coming to know Amy better than I have realized just what an amazing person she is. She is so well-rounded and beautiful that, if it weren't for her warm demeanor and subtly wittiness, you may mistake her for a Stepford Wife.
Ana Haymore: Ana is my rock. I seriously don't know what I'd do without her. She is the first person I call when I have exciting news AND when things are difficult. She is so witty and intelligent, yet so empathetic, thoughtful and understanding. The perfect combination! She is always thinking of others and doing thoughtful things. She is beautiful without knowing it, brilliant without flaunting it, and multi-talented without recognizing it. She is a true friend who will stand beside you through thick and thin. I already have so many fabulous memories that involve Ana and am SO looking forward to many more to come.
Angie Ballard: Though I've only known Angie a very short time, I admire her so much. She is exceptionally optimistic in the face of obstacles whose weight would render most of us paralyzed. She is the most fabulous mother I have ever met. She loves her children with such an obviously deep love that you immediately love them too. She is so kind and gentle that if you don't dig deeply, you could miss the fact that she is also immensely talented, deep, and intelligent. She emanates love, beauty, and kindness and every turn.
Ann Ko: Ann is fabulous. She is the best of both worlds. She is among the smartest people I know, yet she carries it off with an unpretentious style that somehow makes it possible to chat with her without feeling the least bit intimidated. She has a heart of gold and is constantly making efforts toward change for the better.
Anne McDonald: The best phrase to describe Anne is "excellent selflessness". Anne renders more help to more people than anyone I know. She is constantly looking for someone to help out, build up, or otherwise serve. But this is not all--Anne renders this service with an excellence that is unsurpassed. Everything she does is impeccable and beautiful. She is also a fabulous listener and wonderful friend. Though she has innumberable friends, she is the first to welcome you into her circle with kindness. She sees the best in people. Around Anne, I am the person I want to be. Without exception, I am always happier for having talked to Anne.
Arianna Martin: I "heart" Arianna. I could not have survived the CIBSR without her. I feel comfortable talking to Arianna about just about anything. I love that conversations with her can flow from something serious one minute to me on the floor rolling with laughter the next minute. She is a thoughtful, understanding friend who treats everyone with kindness that is uniquely and wonderfully her. She and Bria were the best support ever during my pregnancy and made all of the sickness and pain bearable. I will always associate a very happy pregnancy with the two of them.
Ashley Carter: Ashley is the kind of person I want to be one day. She is patient, kind, thoughtful, hilarious, intelligent, and able to roll with life with exceptional grace--there is not an area where she lacks (except maybe in her knowledge of educational toys-ha, ha). She was the first person to offer to throw me a baby shower even though, because of distance and babies, we are rarely able to hang out these days. She is so thoughtful and kind and has a way of making life fun for everyone around her. Ashley is also fabulously accomplished but will be the absolute last person to ever tell you so (I had to find out the details from her mom!). I think at the end of my life I may lament not having hung out with Ashley Carter more (Ashley we HAVE to get on the ball--do you want this on your shoulders?). If there was ever a perfect friend, it would be Ashley.
Bria...or shall we say Dr. Dunkin: What can I say...Bria made my job worth going to every day. She is such a great friend and the ultimate in cube mates. She is so down-to-earth and warm and kind that you almost forget she is also has it going on upstairs (i.e. she's smart). The one thing I miss most about work is laughing until I cried at Bria and Arianna's hilarity every day. Those were great times! Also, I think I'm going to have Vivi call her Auntie Bria as Bria spoils her more than we (her parents) do.
Carrie Hellewell: Though I am just getting to know Carrie, I already love her! She strikes a fabulous balance between being positive while also being realistic and open about life. I love talking to her because you immediately get the sense that you are understood...that she is really listening and caring. You don't have to know Carrie long before you know that she is a kind, deep, thoughtful person who you are excited to get to know better.
Dacia Mumford: Dacia was the best visiting teacher I've ever had. She was always so great to talk to and so open whenever I would plead for her advice about balancing motherhood. She is a great example of striking that wonderful balance. I've always looked up to her as an example of what motherhood should look like. She pulls it off so well!
Emily Deans: Upon meeting Emily you immediately see that she is dashingly beautiful, immensely talented, charming, witty, etc. You immediately assume that you will probably not be welcomed into the social network of such a person because you feel inadequate for the part. However, you are completely shocked when you get to know Emily and she is just as beautiful on the inside. She is the type of person that goes out of her way to do kind things for you and makes you feel like a million bucks. She never says a negative word about anyone and, in fact, seems to love everyone. I have never seen the worlds of beauty, grace, intelligence, and kindness collide as seamlessly as they do in Emily Deans.
Eryn Gustafson: I love talking to Eryn because she has absolutely no guile, there is never any pretense, and you never have to wonder what she is thinking. She is honest while still being kind. Being around her makes me examine and improve my own integrity. She is a hilarious, and a loyal friend who is always ready to help out a friend in whatever way she can. Everything she does is beautiful (including the fabulous baby shower she threw for me). She is an amazing mother who balances family and daily demands in enviable fashion. I also want Vivian to grow up to be like her two adorable little girls!
Heather Ferrin: Heather is the one person in this world who I would not be the lease bit surprised if she were beamed right up to heaven tomorrow. She embodies everything pure and beautiful about life. She is the most loyal friend I have ever had. She is the kind of friend who never forgets a birthday (and always sends a thoughtful handmade gift), would drop everything if you needed to talk, never harbors ill-will no matter what anyone does to her, and gives selflessly of her soul for the benefit of others. She does all of this, not for any recognition or power, but just because that is who she is.
Jen Mosinski: Though I was the worst visiting teacher Jen has ever had, she has decided to forgive me and be my friend anyway, for which I am immensely grateful ;). Seriously, Jen is the glue that binds all of my friends here in CA together. Without her, all of our social lives would suffer. She is simultaneously the party planner, lesson teacher, book club leader, park days coordinator...and the list just goes on. Not only does she do all of this, but she is fabulous at each and every task. She is so multi-talented that I won't even begin to mention everything she does well. Above all, Jen is a friend and example to all and our lives are all much richer for having known her.
Jenna Crandall: Jenna is beautiful in every way. I have so much to learn from her in the realms of both fashion and friendship! I always enjoy chatting with her as she is so positive and so real at the same time. She is also beautiful at mothering (yes, I just used beautiful and mothering in the same sentence because Jenna pulls it off!!!)
Jenny Preece: Jenny is tons of fun to be around. When all of the old friends get together, it is never the same without her. She has so much energy for life and is always so positive and happy that you cannot help to be in a good mood when you are around her. She is also one of the funniest people I know and always provides the entertainment at social gatherings. She rolls with life with confidence and grace and I don't think I have ever seen her unhappy or genuinely upset with anyone. She is always there to lend an ear or help when it's needed.
Jill Dabo: There will always be a special place in my heart for Jill because of the way she instantly accepted me with kindness upon my showing up at her door with Rob the first time. She has been such a great friend and has done so much for us ever since. Jill is such an example of how to live life to its fullest. She and Mitch truly make the most of life. She is ALWAYS optimistic and seems to balance more than is humanly possible for us mere mortals.
Kate Williams: Kate is a beautiful person inside and out. She is a great friend and a great listener. Though Kate has been dealt a lot of difficulties lately, she never ceases to put her best foot forward and continue to do her very best long after most people would give up. She has so much faith and depth to share with those around her.
Lys-An Record: Lys-An is the most beloved person I know. To know her is to genuinely love her. She is so warm, kind, caring, witty, thoughtful, smart, the list goes on and on. I have no idea how she balances everything, but she does so with such success that I think I may ask for lessons. She is a true friend and one of my favorite people to talk to. I think she genuinely cares about EVERYONE!! I always look forward to visits with Lys-An and always come away a better person.
Meredith Prevot: O.K. so Meredith is technically a friend AND family member (I said no family members in this post), but she must be included anyway because there is so much good to say about her (and because she is a faithful reader of my blog). TALENTED and WARM are two words that come to mind when I think of Meredith. She is an amazing artist (you must all check out her art on her blog), incredibly intelligent, a fabulous musician....there is nothing she doesn't do! On top of that, she is SO KIND!! She is always always always kind and warm and makes you feel good about yourself. Rob and I always talk about how Meredith and Baptiste (her husband) are among our favorite family members to be around because they are just so much fun and so warm. We love you guys!!
Michelle Clark: Well, I think I said above that Heather was the only person about whom I would not be surprised if they were beamed up to heaven tomorrow, but there are actually TWO people I know who fit that description. The other is Michelle. She is the epitome of CHARITY. She is the kindest most graceful person I know. I will always consider her a true friend no matter how many miles we live away from each other. Without Michelle, Boston may have done me in. She was always a listening ear, a warm hug, and a loyal confidant. Also, she is the most patient person I know. Not to mention the best cook I know. Oh how I miss your pork posole Michelle!
Nathali Vincent: Nathali is a European beauty. On top of this, I fully expect her to win the award for the world's greatest therapist (she's an aspiring psychologist). She is so unconditionally kind and such a good listener that I cannot imagine havine gone through the trial that was Boston without her. She is so thoughtful about all that she does and makes life more beautiful with her wonderful and unique way of going about it. I still love remembering our times in Boston with the Vincents, my favorite of which commenced with Nathali filling my shoes with chocolate in true German fashion.
Shelli Kesler: Truly the smartest and most thoughtful person I know, Shelli is also one of the kindest-hearted people I know. Shelli is a champion for equality, justice, and everything good. In fact, it upsets Shelli when people are mistreated. She is the ultimate listener and confidant. She is a loyal friend and fabulous boss (even though she wasn't mine...it would have been cool!) Shelli would be an awesome President (yes, of the U.S.) VOTE FOR SHELLI!!!
Staci Sargeant: It's good to know that after all these years, Staci still "loves my guts"! Truly, Staci is a great and loyal friend. I haven't seen Staci in years and she's just as excited about my baby's pictures as I am and she's talking of making me bows! I don't deserve such a good friend, but am delighted to have one!

I know there are people I've left off (namely Katherine Zinger who I don't think reads my blog). This list obviously does not include my family who are, of course, some of my closest friends. I'm saving that for another post. Also, if you don't see your name here it is not because I don't love you and want to tell you how much your friendship means to me, but because you have never posted on my blog so I didn't think you'd be reading it.

Needless to say, there are so many great people in my life that I am so grateful for that it would take me a million years to write about all of them. I am truly blessed beyond measure in the friend department and thought each of you (at least the friends that read my blog) should know about it. Thanks so much for all you do!! I love you guys!

Vivi's Rise to Stardom

First, let me apologize to my readers (all three of you--hi mom!) for my leave of absence. Between a teething baby and preparing for Christmas I have been a bit frazzled. However, we've resumed a semblance of normalcy and I'm dying to post some recent photos. First, my mom has been asking me for months to take some "formal" pictures of Vivian that she can frame next to her other grandchildren's school pictures. In an effort to recreate the "school picture," I dressed Vivian in my favorite dress and found a place to prop her up in a semi-sitting position (this happened to be our couch covered in my favorite yellow blanket that one of the girls in my Young Women's class made for her). While most of them were quite a disaster, a few of them turned out really well:

Also, recently some friends of ours hosted a navity pageant at their house and Vivi was cast as an angel. She looked absolutely adorable as did all of the shepherds, sheep, wisemen, and Mary and Joseph. During the nativity I was standing next to the daughter of some friends of ours who was an angel with Vivian. She was cracking me up. Amidst a chorus of "Angels We Have Heard On High" she informed me that she had a cough and runny nose (while simultaneously sniffling for effect). I said, "Oh no! I hope that goes away soon," to which she replied, "Ya, I've been praying to Heavenly Father that it will please be gone by Christmas." Needless to say my heart melted. The highlight of my conversations with this adorable little girl came at the end of the nativity pageant as she disappointedly said, "What? It's over? All I did was stand in this trough." I think she was waiting for a moment of spotlight that never came. So adorable. Next year I hope she'll make the perfect Mary and have her moment to shine. Anyway, here are the pictures:

The Vivster's Latest Tricks

Vivi cracks me up. Every day it's something new. Her latest tricks have been:

1) A newfound obsesssion with her feet. She is constantly either grabbing or sucking them.

2)Doing Crunches (I think she's actually trying to sit up, but it looks like she's exercising to me)

Given Vivi's desire to sit up on her own, I've tried to let her practice more. However, I have to watch her every movement because sometimes she suddenly lunges forward and faceplants. Her progress is impressive, though. Here is a picture of her trying to sit up on her own (I love the excited and proud look she has on her face...she is always VERY expressive. It's never hard to tell how she's feeling):

Lastly, Vivi has been "teething" for what seems to be an eternity now. You can see a little bit of white underneath the gums and the the fussiness and gnawing on everything in sight (including the fingers, faces, and noses of unsuspecting adults) are present, but no teeth yet. I keep hoping they come in soon so my happier, less clingy baby will return (since she's started teething, I can't leave her sight or she wimpers). But even grumpy and clingy, she's been pure entertainment. Here's my best shot of her teeth--you can't see anything yet, but I thought the picture was cute:

Forever in Blue Jeans

Everyone who knows Rob is well aware that his favorite clothing ensemble is, without question, jeans and a plain white T. If we were all betting people, none of us would hesitate to wager that Rob would wear this outfit 7 days out of 7 if such apparel were allowed at work or church. For years I've tried to persuade him to expand his wardrobe, but to no avail. A few mornings ago Rob got up with Vivi while I was still in bed sleeping. I awakened to find one of the funniest things I have ever seen:

Rob had, completely unitentionally, dressed himself and Vivi in matching outfits. I guess he must have looked through Vivian's vast wardrobe of adorable dresses and girly jumpers and decided her liked the plain white onesie and jeans best. It was incomprehensible to me, but also adorable and hilarious. She's definitely Daddy's Little Girl! ; )

My "Worst Day" Epiphany

So a few days ago I had what I thought at the time might qualify among the worst days of my life (it wasn't, but at the time it felt like it could be). However, in order to tell the story appropriately, I have to provide some background...

So, in an effort to lose the stubborn pregnancy weight I've been carting around, I have been trying to eat healthier and exercise. Interestingly, these extra pounds which pregnancy has gifted to me seem to respond to exercise with much less enthusiasm than typical pounds and the results of my hard work have been a little less promising than I had hoped. A friend of ours has recently had insanely speedy weight loss results with a program called Isagenix and, given my desire to have these pounds gone before our vacation to Mexico in January, I more recently decided to try that route. While I can testify that this new system works miracles for losing inches quickly, it is not for the faint of heart. It requires that you start out with a couple of "cleanse days" which basically entail the consumption of nothing but a "cleanse drink" that tastes like a mixture of Hawaiian Punch and Vitamin Water. It was on such a "cleanse day" that my story takes place (as a side note, I get exceedingly grumpy when I have not eaten for 48 hours).

On said cleanse day I was hungry, tired, and frustrated. Tired because Vivian is now teething and subsequently deciding to wake up at night/crack of dawn and refuse naps in the day. Frustrated because Vivi was more fussy than usual due to her teething pain and was not afraid to voice her feelings loudly. Admittedly, I was feeling quite sorry for myself.

As outlined in the Isagenix program, on a cleanse day one is allowed to eat hardboiled eggs if one absolultely must. Well, I felt that I must, so I went to the kitchen and put some eggs on to boil. I came back to the living room to find that Vivi has created a diaper of outlandish proportions that somehow managed to find it's way onto her clothing, her blanket, and her toys. Having eaten nothing for many hours, I did not feel like I had the energy or the stomach to deal with such a crisis. However, it was either deal or let Vivi wallow in filth, so I dealt. My first step was to take Vivi to the changing table and removed her clothing, which simultaneously spread the mess all up her back and onto her face (disgusting!) At this point, in a state of near-meltdown, I looked down at Vivi, covered from head to toe in her own bodily excrement, and was surprised at the ear-to-ear smile that graced her soiled face. As soon as I looked at her, I couldn't keep from smiling a bit, which made her laugh. I though to myself, "how can she be so happy right now? Amidst all of this disgusting mess and teething pain, she is happy?" I may have reached my epiphany at this moment had I had more time to think, but before I could carry this thought process further, I heard an explosion in the kitchen. So I grabbed Vivi, leaving the changing table in THIS state...

and ran into the kitchen carrying a very messy Vivian to find THIS.....

That's right, the water had completely boiled off of my eggs and they had proceeded to overheat, burn, and explode all over my kitchen. This was the low point. I almost cried (please keep in mind I had not eaten or slept nearly enough in the previous 48 hours). I would have dwelt in this sad state for longer, but I still had a baby to clean up, so we headed to the bathroom. I put Vivi in the tub and scrubbed her extra well in an effort to be sure that all remnants of the crisis were removed. After I finished scrubbing, I decided to take a moment and bask in the tradition of letting Vivi have some play time in the tub. Again, as I looked down at her, I was surprised at what I saw. So surprised I ran to grab the camera to capture the moment.
Once again, Vivi was laughing. With her finger in her mouth trying to soothe her teething pain, she was laughing. She was loving this bath just like she loves every bath!

It was at this moment that I paused long enough to let the epiphany come. I realized something interesting about Vivian. Vivian's default is happy. In the abscence of intense physical pain, fear, hunger, or sleepiness (and in the PRESENCE of attention) she is always happy. It takes very little to make her giddy with joy. When she was lying there on the changing table covered in poop, she was happy because she wasn't hungry. She wasn't thinking about the gross substance that covered her body. She didn't even realize it was there because she was too busy being happy that she was well-taken-care-of in terms of her physical and emotional needs. When she was being scrubbed down in the tub, she was having a great time because she likes being warm and splashing in the water and talking to mommy. She didn't even NOTICE the negative spin on the bath (the reason she NEEDED the bath). It was then that I began to understand the admonition to "become as a little child". I thought to myself, "what if I were like Vivi and started just being grateful that I was warm, loved, safe, and had plenty to eat." I tried to rethink what had happened that day in "Vivi terms". I thought, "well, even though I didn't get enough sleep last night, most nights I do because I have a comfortable bed and wonderful baby who sleeps well at night when she isn't teething." And the hunger I was feeling? Well, I thought, "at least after this cleanse day, I have plenty of food to eat and will not have to be hungry against my will like many people across the world." I realized there was a vast difference between dieting and starving and I became profoundly grateful I was only wrestling with the former. And what about Vivi's explosive diaper? I realized there are many people out there without children who would do just about anything to have a baby whose diaper they could change no matter how nasty the process. And there are probably just as many who would love for their children just to be whole and healthy.

Though my Vivi-like thinking was short-lived, it did make the next hour of cleaning poop out of blankets, clothing, and off of toys ALMOST pleasant. I have been wondering ever since why it is so hard to be grateful for the little things. At what point did I start taking for granted the fact that I have so many comforts and blessings? I'm not sure and it's something I'm going to keep thinking about, but for now, here's to Vivian. She is truly an amazing gift. She makes every day more happy for me just by being her. I hope some day she will look up to me, but for now, I have a lot to learn from her. XOXO VIVI!!!

Happy Halloween

So this year was Vivi's first Halloween. She seemed to enjoy herself! She was all smiles and laughs. The day before Halloween, we went to the pumpkin patch with our friends Tom & Ana and Vivi's BFF Will (whom she once again tried to attack--see slideshow for evidence. Rob and I are already very worried about her aggressive behaviors toward her male friends). Halloween night (or rather afternoon--Vivi conked out at 7:00pm), Vivi and I went to a Halloween party that some friends were hosting. Even amidst her teething pain, Vivi behaved herself and we got some good pictures with some of her little friends. Rob is mysteriously missing from these photos because he has had a crazy week at work. Hopefully the law firm will treat us better next Halloween. We called it a night a little too early to get any trick-or-treating accomplished which just means Vivi will have to get double the candy next year. We're beginning our strategeries already.

Naming My Blog

So I had no idea blogs needed naming! I've been sitting here for 10 minutes contemplating a proper name with no success. Then I remembered a conversation I had with one of my friends over a recent pedicure (one of the few I've had in my life...pedicures, not friends). My friend, a writer working on her own novel, and one of the only people I know who can legitimately make this comment, said that when she first caught wind of this new blogging trend, she was disappointed because she felt that this would allow mediocre writing an even greater role in our society. She lamented the fact that just anyone would be able to publish their shabby writing online and countless people would waste countless hours reading it. She went on to express her specific disinterest in blogs that were mostly about one's family or children.

Well, for a while I let this intimidate me from beginning this blog knowing that my writing and my subject matter would be mediocre by my friend's standards (and quite possibly by most standards). I knew that, given the little free time I have, I would never choose to spend much time thinking about, editing, or perfecting my entries. I also knew that any creativity I may have once possessed seemed to leave me upon becoming pregnant and subsequently giving birth to Vivian. Finally, I knew that since Vivian and Rob are, in fact, the loves of my life, most of my entries would likely begin something like, "Guess what Vivian/Rob did today..." So, alas, I figured it was better to have no blog than to epitomize mediocrity. However, upon thinking more about it, I've decided that I am excellent at being mediocre, so why not embrace it? Sure I'm not feeling as creative as I once did and sure my life currently revolves mostly around my family making it difficult to think of or write about little else, but honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. This is the life that makes me happiest! So here's to the beginning of MY exercise in MEDIOCRITY!!
